The incumbent will be accountable to the Head of the Centre for Neuroscience in the School of Psychology and Neuroscience for the coordination and supervision of all technical facets of the functioning of our laboratories situated in the Wellcome Surgical Institute (WI) and Glasgow Experimental MRI Centre (GEMRIC) on the Garscube campus, as well as the Sir James Black Building (SJBB) on the Gilmorehill site. Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the technical and operational personnel of the SJBB, WSI, and GEMRIC facilities of the Centre for Neuroscience. The Head of the Center delegated the line management of the core technical staff, including recruitment, induction, training and development, and an annual performance and development evaluation.
  • Be accountable for maintaining and operating the center’s twenty-one Home Office-designated animal accommodations (four of which are long-term holding areas) under Home Office regulations. Standard operating procedures must be implemented to guarantee that no violations will transpire. Maintain close communication with the NACWO, NVS, and Biological Services to ensure that designated rooms in our facilities, as well as procedural and behavioral testing rooms utilized by our staff in the CRF and VRF, are operating efficiently.
  • Occur Safety (H&S) Committee meetings to provide H&S leadership for the Center, guaranteeing adherence to regulations and optimal methodologies. Form an effective correspondence channel with the Safety and Environmental Protection Service (SEPS). Accident investigations, reporting compliance assurance, and employee safety consultations as required. Serve as the safety coordinator for the WSI and GEMRIC buildings and the neuroscience regions of the SJBB.
  • Conduct H&S audits and examinations in collaboration with SEPS, provide guidance to personnel, students, and visitors, and ensure that COSHH assessments are carried out. Oversee the induction process for new employees, students, and visitors to the SJBB, WSI, and GEMRIC about health and safety.
  • Liaise with our specialized technical staff regarding all safety concerns on the MRI apparatus. Maintain authority over the inventory and storage locations of hazardous substances and compounds, including viruses (GM regulations) and poisons, which are also subject to reporting requirements to the Counter Terrorism Police.
  • Supervise the inspection and maintenance of medical gas supplies and anesthetic apparatus, including gas pipelines, regulators, and manifolds, throughout our buildings to ensure compliance with H&S regulations. Ensure that the calibration of anesthesia equipment adheres to the standards set forth by the Home Office. Maintain sensors for oxygen levels.
  • Handling of challenges associated with the structure. Communicate with Estates while supervising routine maintenance and ensuring compliance with H&S standards. For more complex projects, engage in discussions with Estates and external contractors. Identify prospective problems proactively and ensure that routine maintenance is performed. Provide support in overseeing specific Estates-related endeavors within our facilities, including the restoration or adaptation of rooms.
  • Supervise equipment throughout our facilities: Oversee maintenance agreements, including those about specialized MRI equipment. Offer guidance regarding equipment replacement cycles and repairs. Maintain laboratory equipment in a timely and cost-effective manner to ensure compliance with health and safety standards. Conduct routine inspections of biological safety enclosures and freezers for alarms. Coordinate PAT testing of electrical appliances in our facilities’ laboratories and offices. Utilize a database for equipment sharing to oversee specialized equipment within the school and communicate this information to the school.
  • Ensure the safety and security of the WSI and GEMRIC facilities, in addition to the neurological sections of the SJBB. Responsible for supervising SALTO’s access to specific structures and HO-designated chambers. Communicate with University Security personnel stationed at the Gilmorehill and Garscube sites to ascertain the existence of designated “call out” contacts who possess pertinent local knowledge (e.g., the MRI facility) and are available to address any challenges that may arise in the building outside of business hours.
  • Oversee supply orders and delivery arrangements, including gas shipments. Supervise the disposal and management of specialized waste.
  • Ensure compliance with CoSHH risk assessments and associated documentation, as well as adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all laboratory activities. Ensure that a procedure exists for reviewing and revising these RAs as necessary.
  • Participate in meetings of the College Chief Technicians to maintain awareness of College activities, exchange information, and attend updates on other pertinent local committees and groups. It is important to note that these meetings may be conducted at both the Gilmorehill and Garscube campuses. Conduct the yearly space inspection. Identify the first aiders and fire marshals assigned to each structure.
  • Identify the requirements for staff development, coordinate training plans, and execute them to tackle escalating research challenges.
  • Ensure the upkeep of a website that grants personnel access to critical documentation and operational and safety updates on the Centre for Neuroscience.
  • Undertake any additional responsibilities delegated by the Head of the School.

Essential:
