The Engineering Development Programme at Caterpillar is dedicated to the cultivation of your abilities and the enhancement of your skills through rotational assignments and educational opportunities. This program enables you to not only accomplish your professional objectives but also to provide exceptional service to Caterpillar and its customers. Our Engineering Development Programme is a 12-month program that can be tailored to the specific requirements of engineers and technologists who are recruited directly into full-time positions.

What Will You Do?

Caterpillar Inc. is seeking a Structural Simulation Engineer to assist with the development of products and the implementation of Virtual Product Development (VPD) technologies. The primary responsibilities of this position may involve the development of simulation-related processes and technologies, the enhancement of current products, and the application of structural system simulation to early product concepts and design decisions. The following are additional areas of responsibility, but they are not exhaustive:

  • Utilizing fundamental engineering knowledge to enhance technical proficiency and understanding of the business, product, systems, and procedures.
  • Assisting in the assessment and execution of new or enhanced systems, products, or processes.

Degree Requirement:

A minimum of a master’s degree in engineering mechanics, civil engineering, aerospace engineering, or mechanical engineering. Applicants must have either completed or are currently pursuing one of the aforementioned or comparable degrees at an accredited institution, with a graduation date in 2024 or within the past three years. A cumulative grade point average of 3.0/4.0 (without rounding) is required for applicants.

Other Requirements:

  • Finite element theory and methodology are the primary subjects of coursework or research.
  • In the context of finite element analysis, data analytics and machine learning techniques have been illustrated.
  • Previous technical internship, cooperative education, or research experience that is pertinent.
  • Contact/impact, frequency/transient response dynamics, and nonlinear material and massive deformation. FEA analysis using ANSYS, NASTRAN, or ABAQUS.
  • Creo or other CAD software applications.
  • Hyperworks, ANSA, SimCenter 3D, and other software are among the FEA pre/post-processing options.

  • A Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Engineering Mechanics with an academic focus on structural simulation and/or multi-domain system dynamics modeling.
  • Previous research has explored the applications of reduced order models (ROM) techniques, machine learning (ML), and data analytics in the context of finite element analysis.
  • Validation, simulation/test integration, and structural, thermal, and material simulations
  • Analysis of fatigue life and nonlinear mounted joints.
  • Demonstrated expertise in a variety of simulation programs, including ABAQUS, ANSYS, NASTRAN, LS-Dyna, NX, Fe-Safe/nCode, Hyperworks, Simlab, Dynasty, TomSim, Adams, and others.
  • Comprehension of mechanical systems, including hydraulics, engines, drivetrains, and structures.
  • Proficiency in software programming for engineering analysis and process automation.
  • Leadership experience, strong initiative, communication, customer focus, collaboration, and planning abilities.
